MEET OUR NON-PROFIT OF THE WEEK: African Artists’ Foundation

About the Founder(s)

Directed by Azu Nwagbogu, AAF is an NGO dedicated to the promotion and development of contemporary African art and artists, as well as international artists working on the African continent. Since its inception in 2007, the foundation has played a pioneering role in art and academic communities in Nigeria and farther afield.

African Artists’ Foundation was given the privilege of hosting the 2016 edition of Meet the Artist. What’s more, they organize an annual National Art Competition, with each edition driven by pertinent themes in line with current social issues. In its six-year span, the National Art Competition has showcased emerging talent in such diverse mediums as painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, installation, and video art. Each year, the competition includes cash prizes totalling four and a half million Naira and provides the artists national and international exposure and exhibition opportunities.

Head-quartered in Lagos, they promote freedom of expression and social cohesion through creative outreach projects, artists’ residencies, and educational activities. They are committed to nurturing safe cultural zones through active engagement with under-represented communities. To that end, they empower these communities to experience art and expression on their terms.

AAF has also developed many innovative programs that address socio-economic issues affecting the continent, facilitating reform through art. Some of these include our internationally acclaimed flagship project “LagosPhoto Festival”, “Female Artists Development Platform”, “Youth Empowerment through Contemporary Art”, and many more.

AAF also has a number of outreach programs and capacity building initiatives such as the ‘Women Through the Lens’ which is funded by Culture-at-work(a project co-funded by the European Union), a mentorship program for young female artists. AAF directly impact over 500 emerging and established artists annually through its robust program of workshops, artist presentations, talks, and residencies.

Its activities annually attract over 5,000 visitors to its exhibitions, screenings, open mic night, and the Lagos Photo Festival which recently celebrated its tenth edition.
